I can't believe it's been a year since my last Altar Screen painting! So I decided to do another one in a Folk Art Tattered Saint style. Well, I guess the Christmas shopping season is officially here. It seems I went to bed on Halloween and woke up to Christmas according to every T.V. ad and online store. Okay, I'm not sure how to title this piece....I never know how to categorize my style of painting, and I really don't like trying. But anyway, here it goes.....Primitive Modern, Mixed Media, Tattered Renaissance,Earthy, Geologic original grungy Folk Art,Expressionist, Impressionist portrait painting! Well, that's not a practical title, I know,but it's all the styles/genres I love and enjoy painting. I try to incorporate a little bit of each one into my artwork. New Spencerian Paintings.....

Spencerian Script is a script style that flourished in the United States from 1850 to 1925.

Platt Rogers Spencer, whose name the style bears, was impressed with the idea that America needed a penmanship style that could be written quickly, legibly, and elegantly to aid in matters of business correspondence as well as personal letter-writing.

Spencerian Script was developed in 1840, and began soon after to be taught in the school Spencer established specifically for that purpose. He quickly turned out graduates who left his school to start replicas of it abroad, and Spencerian Script thus began to reach the common schools. Spencer never saw the great success that his penmanship style enjoyed because he died in 1864, but his sons took upon themselves the mission of bringing their late father's dream to fruition.

This they did by publishing and distributing Spencer's unpublished book, Spencerian Key to Practical Penmanship, in 1866. Spencerian Script became the standard across the United States and remained so until the 1920s when the spreading popularity of the typewriter rendered its use as a prime method of business communication obsolete. I've always loved the flourished Spencerian style birds and animals,so elegant. I used to paint Spencerian birds years ago, and had the urge to re-visit this style with three new paintings,including one Halloween theme. I will be listing these on Ebay tonight. Portrait of a Woman with Roses....

This is my latest "portrait painting", featuring a woman holding a spray of roses. This piece has a soft and diffused finish to it, although it is not coming through in the photo. For some reason it photographed a little harsh, and I took several photos at different times of day in different light (this is the best I could do). Tattered Renaissance.....

I've been trying to think of new ways to incorporate my love of art history into my paintings, and as I was flipping through some fine art catalogs in my collection, I decided to use the glossy pages of prints featuring old master paintings. In this piece, I used prints of "A Dutch Harbour Scene" by Thomas Heeremans 1660-1697 for the skirt of the dress, and "A River Landscape With Three Huntsman With Their Dogs" by Pieter Meulener 1602-1654 for other areas of the dress and accents. This mixed media painting includes moody colors, subtle textures, layers of papers, and an "aged" finish for a tattered renaissance look, 6 x 12 stretched canvas. As I continue studying art history, I will be painting as I go and posting the inspiration piece if possible. My purpose is not to copy the paintings from the great masters, but to learn from their technique, history, and passion. I will be adding my own touches, and changing elements in my interpretation as a mixed media Folk Art piece. My newest painting "Portrait of a Woman,with Bird", was inspired by "Head of a Mulatto Woman" by Joanna Mary (Boyce) Wells, 1861,shown below. I love willow trees! I'm hoping to plant one this year, maybe two :) Anyway, this is my newest mixed media painting. Full of yummy texture, bits of paper as the leaves, protected with artist grade sealer, 16 x 20 stretched canvas. My plan was to create a quick, simple landscape painting. But, I had to keep adding texture, layering paint, and decided to tear tiny bits of paper for the leaves (which pretty much rendered my hands useless for the rest of the day,lol!) I am currently studying Western Art History and Figure Studies, concentrating on Renaissance and Folk Art. I love to combine these two styles in my work. I will be painting as I study and research these areas of art, and posting new work as they are completed, along with the painting that ispired the piece if available. Sometimes my paintings will look very similar to the ispiration piece, or not at all....sometimes a painting will spark an idea for whatever reason. This is a learning process for me, and I thought I would share it with my followers who love art as much as I do!

I've mentioned before how I love to research renaissance and religious art. I am fascinated by the detail,color and layout. My latest interest is altar screens. I've wanted to paint one for some time, although I would never be able to replicate the size and intricacy of authentic screens. So, I painted my version on a 16 x 20 stretched canvas, mixed media including acrylics, artist papers, 1880's Bible pages, and metallic paint. I hope to paint more on larger surfaces in the future, I loved creating this one. My favorite season is finally here! I would be even happier if my allergies weren't so bad, but I can't have it all. I guess we'll be spending some time at our town's Fall festival this weekend, "The Black Walnut Festival". Fun for the kids with rides, entertainment, and crafts/art booths.
It is still very warm here, which I like. I would rather have a warmer Fall than a freezing cold one. Renaissance Angel....

My love affair with the Renaissance continues. I've been studying the great artists of this era for quite some time. After much experimentation, I finally came up with a color combination using my acrylics that resemble oils. I can not use oil paints because of an allergy, but love the deep enchanting hues. Well, here she is...I finally finished a "Halloween" painting ,my first of the season! This is a larger piece, 16 x 20 on canvas. (My husband asked me why she had trees on her head! lol! "Those aren't trees, that's her hair!!!" but either way, I kind of like it,and that gives me an idea for a future painting....I will try to get her listed on Ebay tonight....(and, just a heads up, I am working on some Art Dolls that will be little versions of the girls in my paintings. Well, I keep thinking I am better (bronchitis),but then I feel worse...this back and forth is driving me crazy! I hate being sick and feeling like I can't get anything done...if I could just stop coughing, I would feel great! Anyway, I have the house to myself today, it is the first day of school and I am really looking forward to spending more time with my artwork. I have so many ideas, and sketches waiting to be born! I've had requests for an "Alice", and have been wanting to paint her for a very long time, so I just decided to do it! Here she is, my version anyway....she finally caught the white rabbit!

Wow, I can't believe how the days have flown by since my last post! I've been very busy away from the computer. We had a small tornado come through last Tuesday morning, and we were without power for two days, then discovered a water line was broken underground when one of our huge Walnut trees uprooted and fell on it! My daughter had a couple of friends staying the night when the tornado hit, and we had to wake everyone up and pile in the car and fly over to my father-in-law's house to get to the basement. It was an interesting journey to say the least!
Luckily we had no damage to our house, just big trees down all around us,and the usual grass, leaves, and dirt stuck all over the siding.
So, I'm looking forward to getting back to painting, printing, listing,and blogging! I've added some new prints to my Etsy shop with FREE Shipping in the U.S., and a few original paintings are on Ebay, and end tonight! I posted a few days ago about going back to the art I love creating....I've always had a passion for the unique, eerie, and unusual....dark even, so...in keeping with my true love of creating,here are my two newest creations! (Well, paint blots), they are holding vintage styled keys,surrounded by various gears and whatnot. I thought it would never come! I'm so glad to be out of the cold... I love Spring, Summer and Fall- I have to have color around me. I always get a little depressed in Winter...so I just wanted to post and run today and say "Happy June" to everyone! (Today is our 18th wedding anniversary, I can't believe it, where does the time go?)
Anyway, I am busy creating new art pieces that will be up on Ebay soon, and new art prints I will be adding to my Etsy shop. I will try to post some pics soon!

Well, I'm finally back! After a time away due to computer problems,etc., I am refreshed and ready to jump into creating once again! While I was missing in action, I've had a chance to think about what direction I want my artwork to go,and to grow my little "creative" business. So, you will notice some changes to my blog, Ebay auctions and Etsy shop,not to forget my artwork....although it may be more of going back to what I love doing, rather than changing to something else...I'll be seeing you soon! (And just a quick note: Everyone who purchased something just before and during my computer fritz, your items have all been shipped! So sorry for the delay!)

After the thunderstorm this afternoon, my little boy looked out the window and said "Look outside Mom, the sky is Beautiful!!", and this is what we saw...if you look real close, you can see one of our miniature horses on the bottom left. My son went outside to try to find the end of the rainbow, of course no luck :)

Sidewalk Chalk....

My kids were having fun with sidewalk chalk yesterday, before the rain....funny that my "Rocker" 16 yr. old was covered in chalk, and my "All business" 6 yr. old hardly had any on him! They crack me up! Here is a small sample of their work....the entire sidewalk was covered in murals all the way out to the drive, but I thought the colored stone path was pretty!

I have always loved 15th. century paintings, so I wanted to incorporate some of the aspects that interest me into some of my own creations. This piece has the texture of frescoes, deep "glowing" color, antique style face,and the wings are going straight up! It's hard to tell in the photo, but I have lightly dry-brushed metallic gold over the texture, and when the light hits just right, it shimmers! She is wearing a crown of greens, and is titled "Angel Of The Forest", available on Ebay now.....

Okay, I love this family room! It looks so cozy and casual,rustic but light and airy...I really would like to try to do our living room like this,and I think I could come close....maybe....kind of...., anyway, IF I get ambitious enough this summer,I will keep you posted with before and afters, and updates along the way....Now I just need to convince my husband we can do it!

Okay, I confess... I am a paper addict! I love the patterns, colors, & textures...I can't stop buying/collecting it! I certainly don't "need" any more, so I am really trying to go through my paper collection (and it's large, believe me!) I've re-discovered some wonderful patterns and colors,that somehow made their way to the bottom of the stack, the back of the shelf, and I'm so glad I did...For a while it seemed my artwork was lacking in the color and pattern department,and I'm not sure why because I love mixing all colors and patterns together! I guess it was just the winter blahs....but now I feel refreshed, and have been working away in my studio putting together layouts for new pieces...I will post them as they are finished.

It was such a beautiful day here! So warm for this time of year....but now it is a little stormy, and there were even a couple of tornado warnings north of us...yes, it's almost Spring, indeed....This is a short post, because I really should be creating and working. I've been enjoying everyone's blogs all day,and didn't get much else done :)

Ready For Spring!

Every year around the month of Feb., I always feel a little, well, dull.....I get in somewhat of a slump, which of course leads to Artist's Block. I've had this blog since Jan., and have never posted anything until now. (So , Welcome and Thank You for being among the first viewers of my blog!) Winter just seems to zap me (after Christmas and New Year's, anyway). But, this week I've noticed the tiny little buds on the trees, some bulbs are starting to come up, and if I look hard enough, I can see the green grass of Spring under the dead brown growth from last year.....So now I am feeling a little more energized, awaking from the dullness. I have some wonderful new Artist's papers that I've been looking through and planning what their future will hold....a new dress for an Angel or Fairy, or as interesting backdrops for my paintings and collages....Anyway, my upcoming pieces are going to reflect my anticipation for Spring with fresh colors and patterns. Of course, I will still have some truly Primitive pieces in the mix! And, new this year.....Art Prints! I am so excited to be offering Archival Prints of my past works....You can find them on Ebay and Etsy.
